Truva Turkish Kitchen is an unexpected culinary experience. Located in a Kenwood strip mall, the restaurant’s unassuming exterior belies a beautiful interior, spacious and airy with industrial touches that will make you completely forget you’re in the suburbs. Its location — between storefronts of local chains Fusian and Currito — would lead one to believe it’s a fast-casual concept, when in reality it’s anything but. As soon as you walk through the door, you’re enveloped in traditional Turkish hospitality and greeted by owners, the Karahan family. Once seated, you’ll hear snippets of Turkish conversation from both staff and guests. Grab a bottle of imported wine or a glass of ayran and order a platter of cold mezze, which includes unique items like spicy ezme, eggplant in tomato sauce and the most delicious pinto beans, with carrots, potato and onion. The traditional Turkish expands through the rest of the menu, with dishes including borek; mashed and smoked eggplant with lamb; okra stew; and lahmacun, a thin-crust Turkish pizza. End the meal with a coffee and slice of kunefe or caramelized milk pudding. If you want more, go back the next morning for a traditional Turkish breakfast featuring an array of fresh cheeses, olives, beef sausage, sliced tomatoes and cucumber, borek and housemade bread and simit with a variety of sweet spreads. truvaturkishkitchen.com.
